Structural Engineering

We offer a range of structural engineering services for new build and refurbishment projects. Our recent projects range from healthcare and education schemes to residential and historic buildings.

We use the latest analysis and design software, and we have embraced BIM from our beginnings. All of our projects are undertaken using Audodesk Revit software, meaning that we are able to collaborate within a 3D environment with the design team.

Design Review and Critique

We have undertaken many tender appraisals for BAM Construction and Kier Major Projects to provide advice and appraisal of schemes they are pricing. With projects often progressing on a D&B basis, with a novated design team, access to the Engineer during the tender period can be restricted. Our role is to review the structural solution to look for options to simplify and speed up the construction, to add value and to provide an “edge” in the contractor’s proposal. Working hand in hand with the contractor we can consider the buildability and phasing aspects and suggest alternative methods of construction.  Once the project is won our role generally ends as the novated engineers complete the design.

  • Hiscox Office, York

Specialist Post-tensioned Concrete Advice

We have been designing post-tensioned (PT) concrete structures for many years and continue to contribute to design guidance, including the current update to Concrete Society Technical Report 43. We offer specialist advice in the design of post-tensioned structures and have recently supported Consultants and Contractors on projects in the UK and Overseas.

On the new, award winning, Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, in London, we assisted in the scheme design of the PT floor, advised on key details and interfaces and provided input to the project specifications. We then assisted in the assessment and review of the specialist contractor's design submissions.

We have now completed a number of similar commissions and have significant expertise in using finite element analysis to model complex structural arrangements. We have also provided Expert Adviser services in relation of PT Structures.

Specialist Cladding Design

We have undertaken more than 10 projects for Laing O’ Rourke’s, Explore Manufacturing, to provide design and detailing for the support and restraint to their bespoke precast cladding units. The design work involves the whole life-cycle of the precast units from casting, through erection and into service with design checks at each stage. The units are all prototype modelled in 3D, including every insert, lifting eye and reinforcing bar. Working in Navisworks and Revit we contribute to the modelling work, which allows full clash detection and coordination, as part of Laing’s DfMA methodology.

We have also provided Expert Advisor services in relation of precast concrete cladding.

Heritage Inspections and Advice

Through the years we have worked on numerous Listed Buildings and other heritage structures. Our recent surveys at the Grade II* listed Church of St Oswold, , St Leonard & Mary Roman Catholic Church and the Grade I listed Ampleforth Abbey Church, involved structural inspections and remedial works. We have also completed a major refurbishment of the Monastery at Ampleforth Abbey.

Set Design

It’s not often that we get to design the skeleton for a Dragon but this is just one of the weird and wacky commissions that one of our Clients has thrown our way. Add to that designing trees, a Cheese Spider, Giant Rabbits, Telescopes, mini tower cranes and a Clock Towers. These form part of exhibits and sets around roller coaster rides and within interactive museums. With project themes ranging from Kung Fu Panda to the Hunger Games in Dubai and the UK.
